Paruko was my second ever character model, completed in December 2022! Her completion time was a bit bloated as I was contributing to two games as both a Art Director and Character Lead at the time, but I’m estimating her total working time at about 3.5 weeks, which is quite slow compared to my newer pieces! But I was still figuring things out, and all in all, I am still proud of Paruko.
I wanted to capture her initial concept art all the way back from the first Splatoon. She was given an in-game model and role in Splatoon 3, but I was a bit disappointed in her depiction. While I ended up capturing the proportions and general colour scheme of Paruko’s initial concept, I decided to go with a PBR textured look and feel, rather than the less detailed textures from Splatoon 3. I avoided triangles as well, so I ended up sliding into a bit of a more TV Animation look, which I think is fun!
