TRURI : 1989.62.8 A pale-blue damask silk bodice with floral design in white; long pointed waist back and front, square neck, laced at the back, marked CC; replacement cream gauze short sleeves covering lace. This forms part of the trousseau of Edith Williams, who married to Reverend Sidney Cooper, 9th January 1890.
Late Victorian evening wear for women included a fitted bodice that slimmed the figure. The bodice was often embellished, though here it is more considered. The beautiful fabric highlighted Edith’s ties to wealth, while the paper-thin lace sleeves add a delicate touch. At first glance a reserved garment, the bodice is in fact exquisitely fashioned. The simple form of this garment resembles the country fashions of the time, which were adopted in wider circles as part of the Artistic Dress movement. These garments evoked natural motifs, contrasting the Industrial Revolution.
