More model informationThis Palaeolithic handaxe was found by chance at Highfield, Southampton. Highfield is situated upon a 200,000 year old flint bank, formed by a pre-historic river that ran through what is now Southampton Common. This is one of a number of hand axes that were recovered from this site. The hand axe itself ovate in shape and has been knapped on all sides. This is a good example of the idea that hand axes were useful multi-tools.
The hand axe has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.
