Orient Point Light, nicknamed “The Coffee Pot” by local mariners, is a lighthouse in the narrow gap between Orient Point and Plum Island, New York. Completed in 1899, the lighthouse was in use until 2011, when it was put up for sale to be renovated.
Many lighthouses of this period were built along the U.S. coast to this basic design in order to save on cost and maintainance. These have become known as ‘spark plug’ lighthouses. Each lighthouse differs slightly from the basic design and many have been given different colour schemes. Oreint Point was originally painted a deep brown that, along with its distinctive shape, led to its coffee pot nickname. In the late 1980’s it was given iits current colour scheme of black, with a wide central band of white.
