This chhod pata was commissioned in honor of Jain laywoman (shravika) Zakalben as a remembrance and a mark of the completion of a vow. The title phrase on the hanging acts as a sacred utterance (mantra), invoking the “Circle of the Perfected Ones” (Siddhachakra Yantra). The circular holy diagram illustrates praiseworthy Jain figures, the perfection they attained, and the way they achieved it. Prince Shripal and his wife Maynasundari, standing on either side of a Jina, exemplify ideal lay Jains. A princess by birth, Maynasundari angered her father when she credited the principle of karma with her station in life, rather than his paternal benevolence. His ego wounded, the king punished her by giving her in marriage to Shripal, a leper and an outcast.
