More model informationOlive Jar Rim #93-1394. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars. Most of the jars broke when the ship wrecked, but we know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This olive jar rim has an outside diameter of 9.4 cm, and stands 4.0 cm tall, above the shoulder.
