Description: In northern Portugal, at the influx of the Douro River into the Atlantic Ocean, boats are made according to the shell method with clinker-built sides and a keel-plank instead of the keel. It is the southernmost region of Portugal, where the clinker built method is used. The rower propels the boat, facing the prow, with long oars resting in the side cut-outs. A spritsail was used, as well. These boats are used in the shad and lampreys fishery, in transportation and as river ferries. Douro is a vineyard region and the city of Porto laying at the river mouth gave its name to the famous local brand of wine. Our boat was built right in Porto in 1977. The rosettes on the bow are ancient protective solar symbols.
