Outcrop on private farmland near Whitton Dean, south of Rothbury, Northumberland.
This area of exposed outcrop was believed to be a new discovery during NADRAP surveys. It’s referenced ‘North Lordenshaw N02’ on ERA and the motifs described as:
“…This panel displays two almost oval cups, one deep and one shallow, and a shallow, probably natural depression - other motif may have been removed by quarrying. The shallow cup could arguably be naturally formed/enhanced.”
Looking at the model, it’s difficult to be certain about the artificiality of any of the depressions. Although their proximity to other definite carvings means they can’t be completely written off as natural.
