Seir Kieran (Saighir Chiaráin) monastery (OF039-003001-) was founded by St. Kieran in the fifth century. The monastery stands on the edge of a stream in the townland of Churchland, barony of Ballybritt, County Offaly, in the parish of Saighir Chiaráin, Diocese of Ossory. 17th-century ledger in Seir Kieran graveyard, Co. Offaly, marks the burial place of Nicholas Herbert of Killyon Manor, Co. Offaly, who died in 1679 AD. According to local tradition the fortified house (OF035-018001-) and bawn built by Nicholas Herbert in 1627 may have been built on site of a nunnery founded by St. Ciaran of Saiger for his mother, Liadhain. The 17th-century fortified Manor House of Nicholas Herbert is marked as ‘Killyon Abbey’ on OSi historic maps. Killyon Manor House ruins stands in the townland of Ballinree 3.45km to the NNW of Seir Kieran. A datestone (OF031-069) ‘Anno Dom 1627 N H’ was taken from Killyon & inserted into the parish hall in the village of Rath (https://skfb.ly/oxRWG)
