New Craig cup marked stone, Aberdeenshire3D Model
Canmore 18823 ScRAP ID 742 NJ74580 29680
Scheduled as ‘New Craig’, cupmarked boulder 850m NNW of Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle. A single ‘seat like’ boulder bearing a group of at 19 cupmarks. It is located in a mature, fenced woodland, surrounded by arable land at 155m above sea level. The above-ground portion of the earthfast boulder is 2.7m wide, 1.2m broad and 1m high. The boulder lies 25.6m from the recumbent stone circle of New Craig.
Although Coles (1902) stated that there appeared to be no association with the New Craig stone circle I noted that if seating on the stone looking over the recumbent stone of stone circle the notable peak of Bennachie could be seen. The Loanhead of Daviot RSC could be seen 0.85Km to the S.
As the stone is scheduled I did not remove any moss making the viewing of the cup marks difficult. However, I did note several clear cup marks and no sign of pecking rings or grooves. The cup marks were predominantly around what could be described as the shoulder of the chair.
