Nakhla meteorite (NHMW-Min J2669)3D Model
3D Scan of the Nakhla meteorite. With a mass of 377 grams and its unusual shape – more or less angular with sharp edges – this Nakhla specimen is remarkable. A meteorite shower fell in the Nile delta in Egypt on 28 June 1911 after detonations and observation of smoke trails hat frightened local people. About 40 stones were recovered; one of them supposedly killed a dog. It is the first of the so-called “nakhlite” group of Martian meteorites.
The Nakhla meteorite is Number 16 of the NHM Top 100 and can be seen in Hall 5 of the NHM Vienna.
