More model informationThe protein neuraminidase is a glycoprotein found in influenza virus membranes . There are nine subtypes and N8 of H5N1 avian influenza is presented. It cleaves sialic acid, the natural substrate, from viruses and cellular glycoproteins to propagate the spread of the virus to new cells.
In this diagram, N8 is shown interacting with the drug oseltamivir, which is capable of mimicking the transition state between N8 and sialic acid. Oseltamivir was the first oral neuraminidase inhibitor, commerically developed to treat influenza. The annotations display the important structural features involved in the interaction between Neuraminidase N8 and oseltamivir.
