Sarnath is home to a number of twelfth-century Buddhist monuments, and the decaying ruins of Mulagandhakuti Vihara leave a mark as it’s the place where Buddha spent his first rainy season while in meditation. This structure has been described in historical documents as 200 feet high with 100 niches with a Buddha carving along every wall. In the Mulagandhakuti Vihara, a real sized statue of Buddha shows the Lord turning the wheel of the law. Behind this vihara is the deer park where Buddha gave his first sermon.
