The Muisca people lived in central Colombia in the areas of modern day Bogota and Tunja. The name Bogota derives from the ruler Tisquesusa who was ruler when the Spanish arrived in the mid 1500s. The Muisca were one of the world’s richest civilizations to ever exist. Their lands were laden with vast salt deposits and they traded this life giving commodity for gold with other groups along thier borders. Figurines, jewlery, even fishing hooks were made of pure gold. The legend of El Dorado, the man of gold, was born from the traditions of the Muisca, locally known as Chibchas.
Muisca peoples had a written language and hundreds of rock-art sites have been found all over central Colombia. The majority of these sites are not available to the public or even scientists, so this work to scan these historic sites is very important. It also insures that these sites are saved and copied before vandals paint on them or fire and smoke ruin them forever. This site above has some smoke damage, did you see it?
