The Mozart Monument was created in honor of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) by Karl König and Viktor Tilgner and unveiled on April 21, 1896. Probably the most imposing monument in Vienna, it has stood in the Burggarten in Vienna’s 1st district since 1953; before that it was located on Albrechtsplatz (now Albertinaplatz). The composer is depicted with a music stand on a pedestal decorated with ornaments, masks and wreaths and framed by a semicircular balustrade made of Sterzing marble. The putti on the pedestal, represent the power of Mozart’s music. A relief on the front, The Invitation and The Appearance of the Stone Guest, depict two scenes from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, while the back shows Mozart at the age of six with his father and sister. The city of Vienna donated a copy of the monument to Tokyo in 1992.
