Morgan Sweeny Headstone (OKBN0033)3D Model
18th century headstone standing north of the eastern end of the medieval parish church ruins (TN009-003002-) in Kilbarron Graveyard (TN009-003002-), Co. Tipperary. The framed inscription on the headstone reads ‘Erected by Morgan Sweeny for his Father Thos Sweeny who died April 1757 aged 65 yrs. The top of the stone is decorated with a soul effigy carved in false relief. The winged face represents the soul of the deceased who is ascending into heaven. The V-shaped pattern beneath the face of the soul effigy may be the rays of the sunburst motif representing salvation of the soul. Alternatively the pattern may represent a neck ruff which was a detachable pleated collar in linen and/or lace starched into shape. The border of the headstone is decorated with a running lozenge pattern. For more information on the headstone, visit: https://historicgraves.com/old-kilbarron/tn-okbn-0033/grave.
