This is a fossil Merycoidodon culbertsoni skull from the Badlands of South Dakota, USA (White River Formation). It is about 30 million years old, Oligocene age. It lived during a time when the badlands was a fertile floodplain with a great diversity of life.
Merycoidodon culbertsoni belongs to the now-extinct Merycoidodontidae superfamily.
The large round holes at the top of the skull suggests that a predator’s bite could have caused this animal’s untimely end.
