The Statue of Mencey Añaterve of Güímar is located on the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias in Candelaria, in front of the Basilica of Candelaria. On the seaside of the square nine giant, over 5 m in height, statues of the Guanche Kings can be found in a row. The statues are placed on sockets of volcanic stone.
The nine statues were created by the contemporary, canarian sculptor José Abad, setup 1993. José Abad was born 1942 in la Laguna. The usage of iron makes his work unique. In the 1980’s he started creating monumental works for public spaces.
Mencey Añaterve’s territory covered the communities of El Rosario, Candelaria, Arafo and Güímar. Añaterve was the first Mencey who made a pact with the conquistadores, with the governor of Gran Canaria Pedro de Vera.
