A large circular bronze bowl 32cm in diameter with incredibly finely engraved decoration showing armed knights. This is barely visible to the naked eye.
To offer different perspectives for this fascinating object we have uploaded the laser scan of the bowl showing what can be seen with the naked eye (https://skfb.ly/oHZGy - this model), the laser can of the bowl where the x-ray is overlain (https://skfb.ly/oJJv8) and the scan of the bowl with the illustration overlain (https://skfb.ly/oJPwR). With the first two models you will often only be able to make out tiny glimpse of elements of the decoration.
The bowl was made in the lower Rhine area of Germany and is one of only a few examples known from England. It is made from hammered brass and was found during excavations on Upper Bugle Street in the early 1970s.
It has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton (SOTLS : A2000.83.284)
