More model informationThis medieval amphora was found during excavations on Lower High Street, Southampton (SOU 266).
In the medieval period beetroot and pine pitch was added to wine to fool customers into thinking it was a more valuable wine than it actually was. Inside the vessel was traces of pine pitch which might suggest the activity was taking place in Southampton. When caught, the punishment was to drink a gallon of the ilicit wine.
The vessel has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton
