This is an image of the marine laboratory of Quarto dei Mille, one of the first Italian laboratories of Marine Biology, which remained in activity from August 1th 1911, until Aril 26th 1915, as reported by ink on the cartoon on which the photo was glued. It was managed with private funds, provided by Dr. Alessandro Brian, Dr. William Mackenzie and Prof. Raffaele Issel, who also was the first Director of the laboratory. The site where the building was located is the rocky coast of “Quarto dei Mille” a municipality 5 Km East of Genoa. This image was found in the collections of the former Marine Environmental Sciences Institute at “Villa Rainusso” (Santa Margherita Ligure) and is one of the few copies of that photography that can be found outside the archival fund Issel-Brian curated by the natural History Museum “G. Doria” of Genoa. The marine biology studies at the Genoa University have here one of their most important and historical roots.
