Maiestas Domini - One of 46 sections. The door of Płock Cathedral
The door of Płock Cathedral was commissioned by Bishop Alexander of Malonne (died 1156). It was cast in bronze by Master Riquin, together with his assistant Waismuth, in the years 1152-1154 at a Magdeburg foundry which belonged to the local fabrica ecclesiae operated by the cathedral and managed by Bishop Wichmann of Wettin (ca. 1110-1192). The figures of bishops and craftsmen who manufactured the door can be seen in the reliefs. The image of Abraham, a Ruthenian founder, was also added in the 15th century. He adjusted the door to the western portal of the Sophia Sobor in Velik Novgorod in Russia. It is assumed that the door was stolen from Płock at the end of the 13th century and after changing fortunes was installed at an Orthodox church in the early 15th century.
