Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof (1859-1917) was a Russian ophthalmologist. He founded the language Esperanto in 1887 under the pseudonym Doktoro Esperanto. Already as a child his enthusiasm fell on foreign languages. At a young age he mastered countless languages. In order to provide a neutral instrument for the quarrelling humanity, he dreamed of a new, easy to learn language.
