On hearing of the plight of Jews escaping the Holocaust, Lt Col. Mary Dover joined the Canadian Army Women’s Corps in 1941. By 1945, she became Canada’s second highest ranking female officer during WWII, and was ultimately awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of the British Empire. Mary Dover was born Mary Cross on July 1, 1905, the offspring of Macleod’s daughter Helen Macleod and southern Alberta entrepreneur A.E. Cross. Cross was the granddaughter of Lt.-Col. James Farquharson Macleod, who successfully led 275 officers and troopers of the North West Mounted Police west to found what would become Calgary, Canada. Mary Dover died in 1994, after contributing to the Calgary community as an advocate for veteran’s issues and as an Alderman for the City of Calgary for two terms.
