Louterion or Thymiaterion. It is a tool used for ablutions or to burn incense. The piece from the Panarea III wreck consists of a shallow basin supported by a pedestal. The latter is formed by a non-grooved cylindrical column tending to widen and set on a circular base. The basin, with a slightly etroflected rounded edge, is decorated with a continuous decorative pattern characterized by slightly raised waves. On the base there is an inscription in Greek characters which was engraved before cooking:
ΣΤΕ
The piece has four radial holes placed at the base of the column, and in correspondence of these, four other holes placed in the base. Inside some of these holes, some traces of lead were found, indicating that lead was probably used to hold the two parts together.
