More model informationDisplayed in the Lismore Heritage Centre, a fragment of the 8thC high cross which once stood, about 2-3 metres tall, near the present parish church. This was the site of the monastery complex founded by the Irish St. Moluag in the mid 6thC. St. Moluag is said to have used Lismore as a base to convert the Pictish area of NE Scotland.
The cross was ade from green chlorite schist, a hard, durable, metamorphic rock that allowed the sculptor to achieve intricate detail. A likely source of the rock is from Loch sween, some 60 miles away.
