Animal Information: Gryphes galfelis, also known as the lesser gryphon, is a small omnivorous creature found in the Alps. Unlike its larger cousin, the greater gryphon, which has the physical resemblance of an eagle crossed with a lion, the lesser gryphon is much smaller in size and has the likeness of a cat mixed with a chicken. Though the lesser gryphon does have wings, it is a clumsy flyer and can only travel a few feet by air.
Methods: To create this chimera, I utilized the Artec Space Spider Scanner and the Faro Edge ArmScan Laser scanner. The Spider scanner was used to scan the cat and chicken toys and the laser scanner was used for the skeletons. After scanning each model, I processed the spider scans in Artec and the laser scans in Geomagic. I aligned each scan, erased any extra data, merged the scans to create a full 3D Model, then filled all holes. From here I used both Maya and Meshmixer to scale, edit, and combine the animal parts together and create a display base.
