One of the impressive collection of medieval graveslabs preserved and beautifully displayed in the old church of Kirkmichael, Balblair, the Black Isle. The slab bears a calvary cross, carved in low relief. The cross-head is of an elaborate stylised form in which the ‘bracelets’ of earlier crosses have evolved and merged with the arms of the cross to produce an intricate interwoven design. The eight-sided central void has caused this style to be known sometimes as ‘diamond-headed’ crosses. The cross rises on a shaft from a stepped base. The shaft itself is flanked by a swords, a shield superimposed on that on the right. The slab was appropriated and reused for a later burial in the 17th or 18th centuries: at this time the letters RE, CE and IA were added. 3D model generated with photogrammetry software 3DF Zephyr v6.010 processing 61 images
