More model informationThe kelp crab (Pugettia producta) is aptly named for both where it lives and what it eats – kelp! Its yellow-green coloring is conveniently the same shade as kelp, which helps it blend into its habitat and hide from hungry predators – particularly sea otters.
The kelp crab, especially younger individuals, also lives in tide pools in beds of algae and eelgrass. At extreme low tides, it’s easily found under rocks and other objects.
When kelp dies back in winter, this crab turns to an animal diet, including small mussels and barnacles as well as smaller creatures such as bryozoans and hydroids.
