Kanuma Castle was the residence of the Mibu clan and is said to have been built in 1532. The Mibu clan was a powerful vassal of the Utsunomiya clan, but later defected and began to oppose the Utsunomiya clan by allying with the Hojo clan, which was trying to control the entire Kanto region at the time. Therefore, when the Hojo clan was destroyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, the Mibu clan also perished, and Kanuma castle was abandoned. The castle was built on a limb of a hill that extends from north to south, with the Honmaru(main compound) at the center and the Ninomaru(second compound), Sannomaru(third compound), etc. In addition, moats and earthworks were built on Mt. Iwakamiyama, Mt. Genkotsuyama, and Mt. Senjusan to protect these main areas.
