Headstone of John Fitzgerald who died 1812. The headstone stands to the north of Kilbarron medieval parish church (TN009-003001-), Co. Tipperary. The top of the stone is decorated with the I H S Chistogram with Latin cross rising from crossbar of H. A pierced heart is visible beneath the crossbar of the H, with sunburst below heart. The Christogram appears to be in the centre of a sunburst with the Latin Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Glory to God in the Highest/ Hymn of the Angels), running around the top of the sunburst motif. Beneath the sunburst there are are two flowering plants running upwards. Two small cross-bearing orbs known as ‘globus cruciger’ are visible either side of the flowering plant. This motif was a symbol representing Christ’s rule over the world or Christ as the Saviour of the World .
