17th-century grave-slab covering the grave of Major John Dalton, who died in 1694 and was buried in St. Owen’s graveyard (WM024-005001-), Ballymore, Co. Westmeath. The top of the stone bears the coat of arms of the Dalton family with the illegible family motto Justus et fidelis Just and Faithful. The poorly preserved partially legible inscription reads; ’ Pray for the soul of Major John Dalton ------- 1694 William caused this tomb to be made Ano 1696’. At the bottom of the stone there is a roundel containing the Christogram with cross rissing from cross-bar of H with heart beneath.
