Type: Sedimentary rock
Description: Jaspilite is a sedimentary rock composed of alternating layers of red Jasper and Hematite or Magnetite, with minor amounts of other minerals such as Chert, Quartz, and Carbonates. The texture is the result of the deposition of iron-rich sediments in a marine or lacustrine environment, followed by the deposition of silica-rich sediments on top of the iron-rich layers. The color of jaspilite can vary from deep red to brown or black, depending on the proportion of iron oxide minerals present. Jaspilite is commonly found in Precambrian rocks (i.e., Lake Superior region in North America).
