More model informationAlthough a medieval iron kiln looks very simple, much know-how is needed to extract a lump of iron from iron ore using a medieval shaft furnace. The kiln works on convection, sometimes aided by bellows. The charcoal lumps need to have the right size (to allow the hot air to move upwards) and be layered with the iron ore precisely. When the iron is extracted from the ore, the oven is opened. Experimental archaeology teams unravel this know-how by rebuilding these kilns and testing them intensively.
