Carved rock found in the Hunterheugh Crags area of Beanley Moor, near Eglingham, Northumberland.
Carved area of exposed outcrop is recorded as ‘Hunterheugh 3’ on the Beckensall Archive (BA) and was added to ERA by NADRAP in 2008. Lichen covers most of the surface making motifs almost imperceptible to the naked eye. Stan Beckensall produced rubbings of the carvings and the BA describes:
“There is a cup at the centre of two rings and an outer incomplete ring. A thin groove links the inner ring to the outer arc. There is a cluster of eight cups; two others may be marking out the line of the incomplete part of the arc. At the opposite end is a cup and two rings, an arc like a horseshoe and eight scattered cups.”
This model suggests that further motifs are present under the lichen.
