Heart-shaped dogu (clay figurines) are so called because the contours of their faces are heart-shaped. This type of dogu appeared in the southern Tohoku region at the beginning of the late Jomon period, and later spread to the Kanto and Hokuriku regions. The dogu shown here has its eyebrows and nose pasted with clay strings, its eyes are expressed with line engravings, and its mouth is expressed with a round puncture. At first glance, she (most dogu are women) appears to be smiling. In recognition of this, she traveled to France in 2012 to attend the exhibision “L’humour dans l’art japonais de la préhistoire au XIXe siècle” held at the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris.
