Hangar S at Cape Canaveral3D ModelNoAI
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was established in 1958 and the next year took over Hangar S and the rest of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) - now known as Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS). From 1959 to 1963, Hangar S played a vital role in preparing the first Americans for space. It was also home to the Preflight Operations Division of the Space Task Group, responsible for housing and training astronauts for space missions. The hangar received, tested, and prepared Project Mercury spacecraft capsules for flight. Additionally, it served as a training ground for capsule simulator exercises, flight pressure suit tests, flight plan development, and communication training. Hangar S facilities provided a training site for the Mercury Seven astronauts to prepare them for their space flights.
