The Giant’s Grave, St Andrew’s churchyard, Penrith, Cumbria, England.
The monument comprises of two tenth century Anglian cross shafts situated at the east and west sides of a setting of four hogback stones. The cross shafts have lost most of their arms of the cross head although traces can still be seen, the upper areas of both the crosses display various interlace patterns, on the eastern cross there is also an animal (deer?) and a human figure. The crosses and hogsbacks are all carved from local red sandstone.
Hogback stones are Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian tomb markers of the C8th-C10th associated with local elites and are found in graveyards of the period. They represent a house with a narrow convex curved ridge and steeply sloping sides which are often heavily decorated.
