The soul is divided into three versions in New Ireland: the soul of the body, the soul of the breath and ges. Ges is the doppelgänger of a person living in the forest. When the person dies, so does the doppelgänger. Ges masks are used in dance ceremonies. The masks are a type of malagan, a common term used for wooden figures and masks made for ceremonies following someone’s death. The purpose of malagan ceremonies is to send off the dead, both as a social person, as a body and as a soul.
