More model informationThe Commander of US forces in Sicily
After defeating German and Italian forces in North Africa, the next step for the Western Allies was to drive the Axis forces out of Sicily. The Allies hoped to open another front in the mainland Italy to draw the German attention away from Normandy, the area of the planned Second Front in Europe. Sicily was to become the gateway to the Apennine Peninsula. The sea and airborne landing of the US and British forces on Sicily – the so-called Operation Husky – began.
