Early Christian monastery (OF014-029----) founded at Gallen, Co. Offaly by St. Canoc in 492 AD. This monastic site was excavated in 1934-5 by T. D. Kendrick. About 200 fragments of cross-slabs dating from the 8th/11th-centuries were uncovered by this excavation. Sandstone cross slab measuring 0.47m high x 0.49m wide that has been inserted into the western face of a wall built on the line of the west gable of the excavated church. Circular-shaped slab which bears an equal armed interlaced cross with circular central hollow. The arms consist of raised double bands which terminate in large trumpet shaped expansions formed of interlace. The cross is contained within a circle formed of a single band in false relief.
