Early Christian monastery (OF014-029----) founded at Gallen, Co. Offaly by St. Canoc in 492 AD. This monastic site was excavated in 1934-5 by T. D. Kendrick. About 200 fragments of cross-slabs dating from the 8th/11th-centuries were uncovered by this excavation. Sandstone cross-inscribed rounded pillar stone measuring 0.63m high x 0.43m wide x 0.18m thick which is decorated on both faces. One face of the stone is decorated with a six petal marigold in false relief enclosed in a triple circle. The other face bears the arc of a triple outline circle. Two deep indentations suggest a petalled design. Below it are incised circles, three with petal or maltese cross design, one divided into six equal segments by straight lines.
