Panel 9 in the Grotto Alcove of the Palatki Heritage Site. This area is in direct association of petroglyph areas being studied as part of a “Finely Incised Petroglyph” project to identify and classify repetitive scratch motifs that are believed to be Archaic or older.
This area of the panel exhibits enechelon fracture surfaces semi parallel to the local dominant NW-SE fracture system. On the left are examples of “Checkerboard” transitioning to the “Big Diamond” motif seen commonly in this area.
The dark red brown eroded areas of rock are <1mm thick iron enrichment zones within the native sandstone that is believed to be a deep earth phenomena prior to surface exposure. The light brown fine SS is the native Schnebly Hill SS. There are of somewhat darker patinated SS that have not been eroded. The light tan and buff areas of very thin (<1mm) vertical fracture fill along the fracture planes.
Rotating the model allows you to study the fine layering within the fracture zones.
