Approximate 6 cm x 5 cm Horse ornament from Roman Sirmium approximately 1st century. Horse harnesses were sometimes embellished with ornaments known as phaterae, normally in bronze cut or cast in the shape of a square, disk, or crescent, most often used in pairs on a harness (on either sides of the horses head or as a central object over the nostrils. The remains of the City of Sirmium stand on the site of the modern-day Sremska Mitrovica, 55 km west of Belgrade in modern Serbia. This example is from a private collection.
