Panel 27 at the Palatki Roasting Pit alcove has multiple cultures represented, rock art styles and complex superposition. This small area shows very fine Sinagua snake type petroglyphs superimposed on Archaic imagery. This is an area being studied in fine detail to determine if Archaic scratches are superpositioned over earlier Archaic or pre-archaic imagery. The maximum width of any snake glyph is under 1 centimeter. They are progressively sloughing off the rock face.
This model is part of an ongoing project to document “at risk” rock art at our Heritage Sites due to natural or vandalism related issues. Additional information about the Red Rock District of the Coconino Forest can be found at the following web sites http://www.sedonaredrocktrails.org/
