More model informationFront of a cinerary urn from Volterra, dated to the 2nd century BC. It is made of alabaster. The urn represents the rape of Persephone by Hades: the divine couple is depicted on a galloping chariot surrounded by infernal demons. Lord Hades, in love with Persephone, daughter of Demeter, decided to abduct her. One day, while the girl was busy picking flowers, an abyss opened up beneath her feet, Hades seized her and, in his chariot drawn by immortal horses, dragged her into the bowels of the earth, to make her his queen.
