Part of the first frieze, which is the lower, larger frieze at top of the podium of the Nereid monument. It represents a series of heroic combats. This slab shows four warriors in combat. To the left two figures fight at close quarters. The nude on the left, equipped with a helmet, short chlamys and shield, pushes his shield against the shield of his opponent. The opponent, very badly preserved, has his left arm raised. To the right a wounded warrior, on his knees, facing front, raises his right arm above his head. Next to him a warrior stands over him, as if about to strike. Each wears a helmet and tunic belted at the waist and holds a shield. The weapons may have been painted.
