Fore Abbey Grave-Slab (WM004-035027-)3D Model
Two cross-inscribed recumbent grave-slabs located close to the north-west angle of the ambulatory on the northern side of the cloister in the Benedictine Abbey (WM004-035010-), at Fore, Co. Westmeath. Possible 13th-century coffin-shaped grave-slab (dims. H 1.75m; Wth 0.35-0.47m; T 0.18m) with moulded edge defined by an incised line and decorated with a possible incised cross-pattée with double lined shaft terminating in a V-shaped point. The surface of the stone has been deeply scored damaging the original carving of the cross motif. After the English conquest of Ireland, between 1180-1185 AD the churches of Fore and their endowments were granted, by Hugh de Lacy, to the Benedictine abbey of St. Taurin at Evreux in Normandy. In 1340 the prior (and guardian), William Tessone, was granted part of the revenues to support himself and five monks, possibly the complement of the priory at this date. This grave-slab may have covered the stone sarcophagus of one of the Benedictine Monks.
