Boulder found close to Fallowlees Burn to the west of Fontburn Reservoir, 5 miles south of Rothbury, Northumberland.
Referenced ‘Fontburn a(i)’ on the Beckensall Archive (BA), this carved rock was added to ERA by NADRAP in 2008. The BA describes “a minimum of 15 cups” and NADRAP drew two different versions, one with 9 cups and the other with 12. Their description notes:
“Some of the cup marks certainly appear to be artificially produced while others have the features of naturally weathered sandstone. Pronounced lips and undercutting possibly eliminates some of the features as artificial.”
