The rock ensemble of the Fontainebleau massif is a group of rock engravings mainly located within shelters formed by the sandstone rock chaos of the geological massif of Fontainebleau. This rock ensemble has more than 2,000 engraved shelters, making it the second largest rock ensemble in France, after that of the Vallée des Merveilles. Discovered and studied gradually from the 19th century, the rock ensemble of the Fontainebleau massif remains relatively unknown to the general public. Part of the works are supposed to date from the Mesolithic. However, the oldest are dated – according to stylistic criteria – to the Palaeolithic. The rest refers to the Neolithic, the Bronze Age or the Middle Ages. A number are also contemporary, from the 19th to the 20th century. (wikipedia)
